The Earth's rotational axis is currently tilted with respect to the plane of its orbit by about 23.44 degrees. That's not an idea, it's a reality, and that's what creates the seasons and wintertime.
However, it hasn't always been that way - over long periods of time, it "precesses", a bit like a gyroscope will start to wobble when it slows down. That's a very complex behavior on Earth, because of the molten core, the oceans and the Moon's influence, but I'll leave that for the astronomers and astrophysicists to explain, if any show up.
Dinosaurs are thought to have gone extinct after the collision of a comet or asteroid (?) with Earth, which would have produced a major climatic disaster.
