Why is it that the toughest time in a marriage is in the beginning years...

...and the late years? For example most divorces occur either within the first 3 years of marriage or at around 25 years of marriage.
The first few years makes sense to me, but divorce after 25 years of marriage doesn't... I mean you've been together living/seeing/talking/confiding with a partner for so long... how can people just end that? Its like ending a relationship with your mother or sibling...
