how to make pictures look aged or weathered?

i am doing a gcse project on ancient egyptians and i want to show the contrast of art work when it is new and old.
what kind of paints, tecnqniques or mediums could i use to make pictures look old or (rough surfaces)??
eg. someone said i could use sand in paint. how would i do this?? how much sand??
