I work Retail and I'll write notes back and forth with the deaf customer. Last week, I was writing and as I'm short and the customer was tall, I turned so he could look over my shoulder as I was writing it--it felt more like a conversation that way.
I'd say that smiling and trying to find a way to communicate-pointing, walking with them to where they need to go, speaking clearly and slowly, or note writing--would be appropriate. Good for you that you care and want to learn.
