2.why does colonel shaw tell forbes that he shouldn't talk to thomas ~~ He is trying to have a little separation between infantry and officers - especially since this is a close and personal friend, that makes it even more important.
3. why is the drill sargent so mean to the men ~~ The weaker the men are and less well trained they are, the more likely they are to die quickly and needlessly. He wants them to learn to be men and fighting machines as quickly as possible.
4. what did colonel shaw do when the men refused to do when the men didnt accept thier wages ~~ He tore up his own wages to show solidarity with his men.
5. what did colonel monotogmery force shaw to and his men to do to the first town they entered ~~ Montgomery's men were used to behaving poorly and raping and destroying the towns they went through.
6. what does colonel shaw think his men will only be used for instead of fighting ~~ He thinks they will be used for slave labor... doing grunt work like digging ditches, building bridges, whatever the white troops don't want to do.

8.why does thomas refuses to go home after he is shot during the first battle ~~ Thomas is becoming a man and learning that his pride in himself is more important than his catered life at home.
9. why do you think colonel shaw volunteers to lead the charge on fort wagner ~~ He was so touched by his men's struggles, self-pride, and love of country that leading his men was the manly, honorable, and strong thing to do.
