You are referring to the recycling numbers. The numbers 3, 6 and 7 are ones to avoid. Plastics with those numbers may contain BPA. While it is not known to cause cancer, the chemical compound does mimic estrogen. The effects of continued exposure to BPA are not yet known. They do make BPA free Nalgene bottles. If you are worried you can try one of those.
