I went through his divorce papers and I found out something very suprising?

My boyfriend had been married once before which was 11 years ago. Two weeks ago, I asked him if I could see his divorce papers just out of curiousity and he did let me see them without hesitation. In the divorce papers, it stated that he was the plaintiff and his ex-wife was the defendant. As I continued reading the divorce papers, I came across a certain paragraph that took me by surprise, it said that the plaintiff (my boyfriend) treated the defendant (his ex-wife) with extreme cruelty and grievious emotional and physical abuse. I then confronted him about that certain paragraph, and he told me that his lawyer at the time told him to let his ex-wife say wanted she wanted to say about him and that the person who made his divorce papers made that mistake. He also told me that his ex-wife had lied to her lawyer when she said that my boyfriend abused her emotionally and physically. My question is, is it possible that my boyfriend could be lying or is he telling me the truth?
