It is possible he is lying. It is possible he is telling the truth. I do know they say weird things in a divorce. I know a guy whose wife accused him of being gay. He was going to protest, but they told him to leave it be, because she claimed they didn't have a sexual relationship, it made the divorce clear faster without usual separation period. On the other hand if you have any indication even one weird feeling he could get violent, then get out.
