| Yes the Tuskegee Airmen were a group of Black men who wanted to be pilots to disprove the theory that Black pilots weren't intelligent enough to fly airplanes. The Tuskegee institute in Tuskegee Alabama was the place that took on the task of training these brave men to become pilots in a very racially charged time. The training was overseen by White Air force pilots some who believed in the project and some who didn't . Large groups of the men went on to become excellent pilots who wanted to show the world what they could do. In 1940 Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt heard of the program and flew down to Alabama to see the pilots and to determine if they could help out the war effort. She actually went up in the airplane of a pilot named C Alfred Chief Anderson. Soon after they began training Black pilots. The Tuskegee airmen became known for the mission they took escorting bombers while they flew to their targets. They became so good at keeping their planes from being blown out the sky they began being asked for specifically from pilots who recognized their bravery,talent and flying abilities. It took sixty years for the Tuskegee Airmen to finally be recognized for their heroic contribution to the World War II War effort.  |
