There is so much support among blacks for the Democratic party because 50 years ago when the Civil Rights Movement started it was Northern Democrats like Hubert Humphrey who joined Southern black leaders in the cause (remember, as early as 1948 Humphrey pushed for a civil rights agenda as part of the Democrats' platform). Southern Democrats were so disgusted with this that they bolted to the Republican party around the mid-60s. At the very least, that is the origin of the widespread support black Americans have for the Democratic party.
