The membrane itself is a phospholipid bilayer (hydrocarbons with phosphates on the surface that face water).
Attached to the membrane is the extracellular matrix which is composed of glycoproteins (proteins/carbohydrate compounds) and glycolipids (proteins/lipid compounds).
