There are strong indications that Queen Victoria of nineteenth-century England used the herb during childbirth.
But it's been known for it's psychoactive qualities since written history began. Nobody can say when it was first used - probably as long as ten thousand or more years ago. Remember, it does not have to be smoked - it can be chewed as well. A bud of mine used to mix weed into his homemade brownies in an effort to get girls stoned enough that he could take advantage of them without them putting up a fuss - but the only one it worked with was one he got stoned with, and he woke up married to her and wondering what the hell happened!
