| Why did the Whigs, Democratic and Republican parties succeed in the 1800s?
There were many minor third parties in the 1800s such as the free-soil party, know-nothing party, and the anti-masonic party, but none of them got a candidate in the highest office (United States President). Why did these third parties not succeed and go as far as the Whigs, Democrats, and Republicans today.
