What do you think is proper phone etiquette for a wrong number?

Well, we used to have a phone number that was one digit different from a Howard Johnsons' Restaurant -- yes, a very long time ago. We'd get calls almost daily for their manager, Mr. Credeco. We finally looked up the number and we all knew it and just gave it to people, with an admonition to dial carefully. You weren't wrong to hang up. They were kind of nervy to ask you for a different number. There's no reason to expect you would know it, and really no reason for you to go out of your way to find it for them, at your expense! Forget about it.
