these metaphors could mean a number of things. my interpretation would be: you felt your life was out of control and or going now where, despite your best (strangest) efforts of using grapes for brakes. the people on the other side of the gate could represent a place or time where you do not desire to be. were you driving or a passsenger? just curious.
