The party originated as an abolitionist, northern party. It has changed dramatically over 150 years.
The HIGHLY ironic thing is that the democrats are responsible for a large amount of poverty among African Americans. By introducing welfare, huge numbers of lower-class but on-the-rise African Americans found it easier to get paid for nothing by the government than to a job, rise up the ladder, and become middle-class. As a result, large percentages of them were kicked back down into the ghetto and remained firmly lower-class. Even today this is still going on. Had moderate/conservative economics been sustained, the huge urban minority lower-classes you see in cities like LA probably wouldn't exist.
