Text him!!!! ask him how things are going with his family. "Hey! how's everything going with the family?""Are you having fun?"Guys love being asked about what THEY are doing and what their interests are and whatnot. Makes them feel like they're the center of the universe especially when it's a girl they like and they aren't just going on and on about themselves.If he found out you like him and talked to your for 9 hours after the fact, there's NO harm in texting. In fact, if you wait til he gets back to talk to him, this could come across as a loss of interest. Think of it from his point of view. I text a girl, have a great time talking to her, she says hey for my birthday but then the entire rest of the trip I don't hear from her at all all of the sudden. It never hurts to check in
It shows that someone actually cares and misses him. Note: I know someone gave me a thumbs down and Im not sure exactly why. But seriously, I've been in this exact same situation from what you're describing and it always brings a smile to someone's face when they feel like they mean something to someone.
