Sounds like you are describing two different things. There are people who are depressed and for whatever reason cut themselves. I'm not sure if you would call this masochism or just people that are engaging in self injurious behavior. I think a big reason they do this is to sort of transform their psychological pain into a more concrete bodily sensation of pain. Then there are people who enjoy some degree of pain in sexual encounters. These people may enjoy being tied up, spanked, verbally taunted, etc. Masochism is named for Masoch, who first described it, I think he was French.
