Land topography, air temperature, air mass all can have an affect on wind characteristics. A plane doesn't fall out of the sky due to a difference in pressure above and below the wings. Lower pressure above the wings allow higher pressure beneath them to "push" the plane up. The engines are necessary to provide the momentum to allow a sufficient amount of air to flow over the wings depending upon the weight and design of the aircraft.
