Not heard that one.
Perhaps its similar to a folk story I heard. (Version I heard was centred on a Hall (in NE England) and some woods that are nearby, but there's bound to similar stories elsewhere) Here's a brief summary of the story:-
Powerful local lord tries to force marriage on unwilling girl (she has a true love, and does her best to resist the advances of the lord, so he kidnaps her).
On the eve of the wedding the girl escapes from hall where she was being kept prisoner. It is a dark night of course, so she manages to get a bit of a head start, before she is missed
Lord's men hunt her (on horseback), and she takes to hiding in woods.
Men can't find her and give up (for the night)
Men resume the search the next day, far and wide, but she's never seen again
Many, many years latter a tree is cut down, and a female skeleton is found within the tree. The wood completely surrounds the bones. Theory goes the girl hid in a hollow within the tree, and she couldn't get out. She didn't call out for help, and eventually she dies, and the tree grows around her.
Not sure if I confusing it with another myth, but if I remember right the, girl's true love, lays a curse when she disappears from the village. NB the curse is laid by a male (rather than being put into the care of "witch"). At the point it's laid she's still alive, but it's hinted that the laying of the curse, unintentionally causes the girls death!)

The woods in question are also supposed to have a "Bogart". The Bogart appears in the form of an owl, and plays all kind of tricks. I've also heard other rumours (in the 80's) regarding groups performing some kind of magic there (I was a kid so of course it was "devil worship") If there was/is a pagan group working there (and I really wouldn't be surprised!) They probably wouldn't appreciate visitors, and would do there best to discourage visitors (at least those who are antagonistic to their practises!), by starting a few urban (fringe) myths.
