diabetes is hereditary (which means it runs in the family) your father could have had it if he didn't then your grandfather could have had the disease it usually skips a generation or 2 and don't believe people who tell you if you gain weight you'll become a diabetic because that is a myth the only thing you'll get for a gaing weight is high blood pressure.
I am sorry to say you'll have to learn to live with it, did your doctor prescribed any medication yet and did he tell you that you'll be taking insulin (needle) and I think for right now he'll probably prescribe some pills for you take and instruct you on what types of food that you'll have to eat and how much
And as for your coach, prove him wrong that people with diabeties can play sports look on-line to see if you can come up with sports personalities who have diabeties and still play sports eg (hockey, football, baseball, scoccer, and gymnastics and if you find any print it out and show it to him
