No, but I would not call it a requirement either. I would also recommend some reading on grammar and word usage!
When teaching I use "Think" by Simon Blackburn to start off students with no previous contact to the academic side of the subject. Writer's Ink is also great for writing issues.

Try this - "Is reading books on the subject too much to ask of participants answering questions in the philosophy area?"
Just kidding! It was clear enough as it was and had very few word usage errors. Better than some of my old college students and faculty.
