depends on what data you have available. Census is the best way to connect people. If you know where your grandfather grew up, check the census taken when he was a child. It should list him, his siblings born at the time and his parents. You can trace them in 10 year increments.
The more families moved the harder it is to trace them. If they stayed in a general area, you can trace back a couple of generations this way.
Other options are wills. They usually list the children as heirs of their parents estate.
