Can anyone answer my questions about small business liscences?

I am a high school teacher starting a small side business out of my home. I breed feeder mice for reptiles that I sell to local science teachers, responsible locally owned pet shops, and individuals who own reptiles. I've done my research and know that I do not have to apply for a breeding license unless I breed more than 1500 mice/year--not an issue right now b/c I control my population to fit my demand, which is small at present. If my business really takes off, I will need to apply for a license with the department of agriculture and renew this license every year. I want to know what other licenses I may need. What will I need if I keep my business based out of my home? What will I need if I REALLY get rolling and decide to rent a small retail space?

You need to talk to your local city and county regulations regarding this type of business in a residence.

I dont know about the breeding part but as long as you are small and working from home you can remain a sole proprietor and just keep good records and get all the tax deductions you can (good CPA).If and when you decide to move to a rented space I would highly recomend that you form a Sub S corp. which can protect you from most liability.
