Arasan has a spectacular aura about
Typhoons are associated with mainly three elements. They are explained below.
(1)Typhoons are associated with steep pressure gradients and consequent strong winds. These, in turn generate storm surge.A storm surge is an abnormal rise of sea level near the coast caused by severe typhoons. As a result, sea water inundates low lying areas of coastal regions ,drowning human beings and live-stock,eroding beaches and embarkments destroyng vegetation and reducing soil fertility.Agricultural fields near the shore will be filled with salty soil making it unusable permanently.
(2)Very strong winds may damage installations, dwellings, communication system, trees(particulaly coconut trees and plantain trees grown by farmers) etc., resulting in loss of life and property.
(3)Heavy and prolonged rains due to typhoons may cause river floods and submergence of low lying areas including agricultural lands.Further the floods may cause loss of life and property.Floods and coastal inundation due to storm surges, pollute drinking water sources causing outbreak of epidemics.
It may be mentioned that all the three factors mentioneed above occur simultaneouly and therefore, relief operations for distress mitigation become difficult. The most destructive element is the storm surge. If the surge magnitude is five metres and above, it will be catastropic.
