Do navy blue and terra cotta go together?

I just inherited a navy blue couch for my living room and I have an oriental rug with terra cotta in it that I love. What color should I paint the already terra cotta walls. Actual paint color is paprika. (too much orange) What about accent colors? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I just don't know if these colors clash.

Previous answer is great. I would also suggest buying or making some pillows or artwork in your favorite style that combines the two colors to pull it all together. Or even some terra cotta pots with a blue design on them with some nice plants, etc.

Yes, they do. It's a very southwestern color combo. You might like to paint your room something relatively neutral, like "spalding gray" by sherwin williams, so that the navy & terra cotta will take center stage:

As for accent colors, forest green, plum or dark gold would work beautifully. Look at the color combos in some of these area rugs for inspiration:

Orange and blue are complementary colors. They go together well. There is one consideration however: if you have just orange and blue in the room, then they will become screaming colors! The orange will make the blue shout out and the blue will make the orange do the same. If you have other colors in the room, it will work.

Consider using the terra cotta on the walls since you like it so much. Just tone it down a bit. Go a couple of shades lighter.

If you use a color wheel and make a triangle of orange with colors located equal distance away you will get your biggest contrast - purple or green. Either or both of these colors are fantastic with orange.
