I'm confused about the "leave" in the Air Force?

I was told that if u r assigned at a base in the states you could go anywhere (almost only close enough so that u could go back to work the next day) on the weekends unless u have a shift on the weekends..that's true right? so...if i visit my friend's house during the weekends, am I spending some of my "leave" time that i get 2.5 hours a month?
what exactly is the "leave"? I'm confused. help
