Are there any medium to large sized dogs that are good for allergy sufferers?

(Don't shed much)? My wife and I are about to move out of our apartment and into a house. (Hooray!)
The neighborhood is decent, but I would like to keep a dog for protection, and for when we are not home.
The problem is, I am allergic to pet dander. I am not one of those people that starts sneezing immediately when pets are around, but if I pet or handle a dog or cat, then touch my eyes, etc, I always end up with a stuffy nose, watery itchy eyes, etc.
My mom had a Shih-Tzu for many years, and it never bothered me a bit. I know that "hair dogs" are OK for me, but a Shih-Tzu isn't going to scare any burglars away.
I also would prefer if it *wasn't* one of those stupid curly sheepdog lookin' dogs, which seems to be the only "non-allergic" breeds of size I can find with my internet searches.
Any suggestions?

Although I dont believe in designer dogs, I have met a few Labradoodles that are quite large and don't shed at all. The owners tell me that their coats are easy to maintain and they don't have allergies with these dogs as they would normally.

Standard Poodles, they come in black which most people find a scarier color in any breed. Poodles are the most intelligent breed, originally bred to hunt ducks and many still do and have the titles to prove it. They also make good personal protection dogs.
