can u develop an allergy to cats?

have 2 cats, both abandoned, one is at least 7 months and the other is around 3 or 4 months, have had older cat since before christmas and im just wondering can you develop an allergy to cats? am sneezing, runny eyes, constant nasal drip(pretty i know!), and have cough for the last 3 bloody weeks! not a cold or flu, as ive taken some cold/flu meds and its not shifting it...
