Can you suddenly get allergies if you have never had them before?

I feel sick like I have a cold or flu(sneezing, runny nose, gravely throat, headache). It was suggested I have allergies although I have never been known to be allergic to anything. On the other hand the pollen has been bad in my area(my black car is practically green). Could it be coincidence or have I suddenly become allergic?
