Asthma, allergies?

I have had asthma since I could remember, and recently when to a lung doctor to see exactly what was wrong. There are two possibilities. Either it was passed down from my family or allergies. If the allergie theory is correct, does it have a chance of going away? I am allergic to dust mites and I heard they are in animals with fur. Does this mean I can't have my dog anymore? I don't notice anything wrong with myself when I am around him, and we've had him for over 4 years............
