What does an ENT (ear, nose, throat) doc all do at check up - hearing...

...problems & possible allergies? My son is going to see an ent doc. He has been failing hearing test. A hearing instrument shows a flat line which I'm told could be do to fluid build up behind ear & son may need tubes. Also recently been told he has allergies.
What does the ent all do at first app, what do they look for? Are there other ways besides tubes to try to help fluid drain? My son also snores & he's only 5. Need info on tubes in ears & allergies. Don't know if he has indoor/outdoor/pet allergies.
