Son has allergies, don't know what to, allergy testing, nose problems?

My son snores a lot at night, this has been going on for a long time. Recently he's been waking up with goopy eyes sometimes (not pink eye, been to docs) & his nose has been running a lot (usually greenish-yellowish). The doctor said he has allergies. I'm surprized of this cuz allergies aren't a big thing in our family & his Dad & I don't have allergies, neither do our parents. We don't know if it's indoor or outdoor.

How do they test a child for allergies to know the cause? Could his snoring (even though it came long before the goopy eyes & runny nose) be a sign of allergies?
