Starting solids..Allergies??

Do you ever feel like its kind of ridiculous that parents are advised to start with one thing at a time to check for allergies. How many people do you know are allergic to carrots or green peas?? I am following the guidelines to be safe but sometimes I think its all a little too much...thoughts?
