Could you develop an allergy to anesthesia?

I'm going to the dentist tomorrow, and I haven't gone in a long time. I've been developing a lot of allergies, and I've been hearing stories of people dying in the dentist's office from allergies to anesthesia.

Could this happened to me?
What should I do?
