Any way to help an allergy to cats?

I was born with already three cats in my family. My parents were told that I was highly allergic to cat dander, but still we kept them. Over the past two decades I've suffered a lot of rashes, sneezing and watery eyes from cats (we've had several over my lifetime) - especially in middle school. After that I got a bit of an immunity to them. Then I went off to college. And now every time I come back home my allergies are actually worse than ever. Is there any way to help it besides benadryl? I can't stand being allergic to my favorite animal. But I'm miserable at home.
