emergency! 12 weeks old baby sick....or allergies? Hello. I have a wonderful 3 month old son is just a doll...anyways..since birth he has been very stuffy. The snot is clear and sometimes when he sneezes he has some gnarly snot rockets. his eyes get watery and red too. lately he has a little cough . at night its the worse too, when he lays flat i can hear all the gunk in his nose. I am constanly using the baby nose sucker. Now, he eats fine, and he acts fine and no fever, but I am just worried cause now its more of a bit of a problem. I tired to call his dr. and their closed! what children's dr. closes at 1pm on a wednesday? so should i take him to the ER or is there any medicines or some home remedies I can try. It may be nothing but I am only 23 and this is my first baby so i dont want to take any chances. any help please! thank you so much for everyone anwsers. its very nice to hear opinions from other parents

OK, don't panic! He's your first that's understandable, firstly no fever and he ist still his usuall happy relatively active self, not lethargic? Then it is probably just a bad cold. Try keeping him a bit more upright, put a few books underneath the head end of his cot or crib to that he isn't so flat and help make his breathing easier, I think at 3 months you will be able to use a baby menthol rub or something similar to help clear his air ways, take him out for a nice stroll down to your local pharmacy and see what they have like that, the fresh air will help too. Also try running the hot tap int the bathroom or the shower and make the room nice and steamy, sit in there for about ten minutes with him this might help his breathing a bit too. If it is a cold it could take quite a few days to clear up, just keep an eye on him, he may not be able to feed as well and might get a bit grouchy because of having a blocked nose. just keep and eye on his temperature, if he does develop one, keep him cool until you can see your doctor and get a prescription, if needed to reduce it.

Just make sure he's getting plenty of milk so he doesn't get dehydrated. You can try putting him in the bathroom while you take a shower. Steam often helps unstuff baby noses and ease coughing. Otherwise, you're doing what you should be doing-- sucking out the snot. You might want to pick up some saline nose drops, too. It can help break up congestion and soften stubborn boogers so they're easier to remove. If there's no fever and the snot is clear, there's no reason to take the baby to the ER. Call the doc during office hours.

it sould like it is just allergies. but just to be sure i would watch him overnight and keep checking for fevers, if he gets a fever take him in, if not call the doctor and see what they would recommend that you give him, i have always used mucinex for children and it works wonderfully.

You are the mother and you know your child best. If you feel you should take him to the ER, then by all means take him to the ER. And as for allergies, my baby's pediatrician says it isn't possible for baby's to suffer from allergies. I don't know how true that is. But, it is normal for babies to be sneeze and be stuffed up after they are born. I mean afterall, they were in fluid for 9 months. If you think your baby is sick, then get a doctor's opinion.

It's probably allergies but I'd say if it sounds like he's having problems breathing or getting air then yes take him to the ER. Don't give an infant ANY meds without talking to a doc first. I learned the hard way. My son was sick and I waited and he got wrose real fast and I felt so guilty when all I had to do was take him to the ER when the doctor's office was closed. Now, I don't hesitate at all. I mean if there is something that can be done to help I wouldn't want my child to suffer any longer than he had too!

He's ok, don't worry. All you can do is suck the stuff out or irrigate it with saline. Use a humidifier at night. Put something under the mattress at his head so he's slightly elevated. Call the doctor's number and listen to the whole message. there will be a number to call for off hours. call it. If he doesn't list a number like that, ask for it next visit, and if they have none, switch docs! Till then, no meds! he's only a little guy. Too young for drugs.
