Swollen throat from allergies??

So I have allergies, but I've been wondering, is it normal to get a swollen throat with allergies? I've gotten this probably about 5-6 times in the last year, mostly during the spring and summer. It starts with a scratchy, sore feeling, and overnight my throat is very swollen. Last night I actually had to wake up twice because I couldn't breathe very easily. It gets better when I sit up for about 1/2 hour or so. I'm pretty sure it is allergies because my eyes are watering too. Anyways, I think I know the answer to my own question - to go see a doctor for sure, but I just don't have the time. Oh, and I've tried to take allergy medicine, I took some last night when my throat started to feel scratchy, but obviously it hasn't helped. Any advice would be appreciated.
