CAN'T BREASTFEED FOR 10 DAYS!!! What the heck am I going to do????

Hi all!I am a breastfeeding, co-sleeping, baby wearing Mommy to a beautiful 8 month old baby boy. I have worked through several breastfeeding issues due to mastisis, thrush and even taking high blood pressure medicine successfully. I went to the doctor today in a lot of pain to find out I have a MRSA infection! It is unlikely that I can pass this infection through breastmilk (THANK GOD because I have had it for about a week!), however the medicine that I have to take for 7-10 days is UNSAFE for breastfeeding. There are NO other options. My doctor spent 45 minutes looking up everything under the sun today trying to find an alternative. I really have no choice at this point and I am HEARTBROKEN! I left the doctors office in tears! I only have enough frozen milk to last a few days... But what's worse for me then giving an alternative is that my baby wants to nurse and I have to say no! Has anyone else gone through anything like this? Help!Of course I will pump and dump for the 10 days to keep my supply up and continue to breastfeed afterwards!UBER! Thank you so much! I called my Dr. who got on his website and changed my medicine to what Dr. Hale recommended. I CAN INDEED KEEP NURSING!!!! YAY! I called my LLL to double check and they say yes too! I'm so happy!Thank you Shroon! That's the medicine my doc switched to!Dede... I'm well aware of what MRSA is as I have had it before. I am not uneducated, just dedicated. Obviously you are not a b/f'ding Mommy, but thanks for the input anyway!

I'm so sorry!!!Wondering makes a really good point, you could look into that so your son doesn't have to have formula.. it will be still very hard but at least he won't drink formula

if your going have to use a bit of formula . dont use all your frozen milk at once use it with formula so you arnt giving your bub just formula . tough one good luck

You could see if your hospital has breastmilk that you can purchase, some hospitals bank BM so in situaltions like this and with premies they will be able to give them milk, good luck.

well, keep in mind that 3 days after you take your meds, it is still in your body, so you should ask you rDR how soon after can you feed. But it shouldnt hurt to switch to formula then back to the breast milk. your baby is old enough for the rice cereal, so he will be getting enough filling food, and it shouldnt be to hard on his system since he isnt relying solly on breastmilk. i hope it all works out for you. And you should look up MRSA on the internet. I saw an episode on DR phil. It is untreatable. It is a strain of staff infection that is resistant to antibiotics, so you will have it the rest of your life. Do your research and talk to your dr. Good luck hun.

Formula isn't bad for your baby. I know that you have always relied on breast feeding, but it isn't the end of the world. I know how heartbreaking it must be to tell your baby no, but you can still snuggle up close to your baby when he has the bottle. In the grand scheme of things, you have a beautiful baby boy who has been healty because of you. Although heartbreaking, 10 days will go by faster than you think.

Has your child had formula before? If not, you're going to have to slowly introduce it between the frozen bottles of breast milk. As far as your discomfort goes, I know how it is! Even with the pumping, you might get really full and it can be painful. I've found that laying on my stomach in a hot bath is the only thing that really helps.Good luck!
