Thumbs up Stand-To!- Historical Armory Activities

TODAY'S FOCUS

Historical Armory Activities

What is it? The Army National Guard (ARNG) has increasingly become aware of how many national and community treasures are represented by approximately 2,700 U.S. armories. From architectural innovations to community outreach and educational events, American armories are unique and ubiquitous. Similar to the community firehouse, the armory has increasingly become a symbol and a centerpiece of esprit de corps since 9‑11. With worldwide mobilizations and demobilizations, armories have frequently become emotionally packed theaters of family farewells and yellow-ribbon welcome home celebrations. Armories constitute perhaps the most tangible and visible stateside symbol of the citizen-soldier serving community and nation.

What has the Army done? Recent and historically noteworthy accomplishments and activities at our armories include:

• The Sikeston Armory in Dexter, Mo., previously the home of Charlie Company, 1140th Engineer Battalion, was reborn as the home of the new Missouri National Guard unit, Detachment 2, 1221st Transportation Company.
• The New York State Historic Preservation Office (NYSHPO) completed a survey of pre-World War II armories in New York State.
• The Guthrie Armory in Guthrie, Okla., was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
• The Savannah College of Art and Design purchased and refurbished a 19th century Richardsonian- Revival armory for use as its principal administrative building in Savannah, Ga. To continue reading this topic in its entirety, click here.
