Do you have to pay for your food on a navy ship?

Been watching the documentary "Carrier". It's alluded but not explained that you have to pay for your food in the mess deck. If so, how do you payfor it? like a hospital cafeteria? (where you get your food and swipe your employee badge) or physically hand them cash? Or is it like a college dorm where you pay for so many meals a day/month/week?

You get a monthly food allowance. When you are married or single living off of the base you get the money on your pay-check. But if you live on base and eat at the chow hall or go out to sea they take your food allowance. Kind of stinks when you use that money to feed your wife and kids.

I've been watching that documentary too and from what I gathered the enlisted personnel do not have to pay but the officers do and there are two different mess halls one for officers and one for enlisted.

At least thats what they said on the show.
