We develop and deliver software in stages, or increments. In this manner, we identify and resolve problems, and integrate the latest technologies into the force without disrupting our entire modernization effort." - Lt. Gen. N. Ross Thompson, military deputy to the acting assistant secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology and director of acquisition career management for the U.S. Army TODAY'S FOCUS Asymmetric Warfare Group What is it? The Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) is a special-mission unit reporting through the Army Asymmetric Warfare Office to the Army G-3/5/7. The unit consists of military, Department of the Army Civilians and contractors with an authorized strength of 377, each of whom is carefully screened and selected for unique attributes and operational experience by means of a nominative process and modified personnel management procedures. The AWG mitigates strategic and operational near-term risk by anticipating emerging and future asymmetric threats and enabling the development of solutions to any capability gap. What has the Army done? The AWG observes and collects information about the evolving asymmetric operating environment by providing operational advisors to deployed and deploying forces in support of the war on terrorism. From this vantage point, the AWG informs senior leaders of the evolving conditions that may require short-term policy and resource allocation decisions.
