There's a lot of veterans from quite a few wars in my family, some of whom came home to be firefighters. I thank them lots of times. And every once in a while, when I see a young serviceman obviously home on leave, I go up to him, shake his hand, and tell him that I know I'm a total stranger, but I appreciate what he does. I do it because I mean it, and the proud looks on their faces is just icing on the cake.
