Can any US military personnel (active or not) answer this?

First of all, I want to thank you all for serving our great country, you have my deepest gratitude and highest respect!

Why does the military deny an individual an opportunity to serve his/her country due to their criminal back-ground? I have been fervently trying to enlist for the last three years, however, I have been repeatedly denied because of my Class B felony (armed robbery—I usta rob mid level drug dealers prior to their next purchase). Since my very poor choices as a youth, I have developed a strong and positive track record as an American citizen.

I would like some insight from those who serve, or who had served, as to why the military would not let individuals such as myself serve my country? Do you even feel that individuals with my kind of background, or similar, should even be given a chance to serve our great Nation? Why/why not?
