What happens to parental rights when one parent joins the military?

My (ex) wife joined the military yet her mom has our 3 year old daughter. Since we have no legal papers, am I still the legal guardian? Can I just go get my child?

You probably can. See a family lawyer and get yourself a court order to be clear about it all and avoid a charge of parental abduction.
