Special Forces and Rangers are two different categories. As a First Cavalry Division recon scout during Viet Nam, I found the Special Forces to be highly qualified men who never had to brag about their qualifications, they knew they were good, and rightly so, they have always had my admiration. Rangers, on the other hand, never got along with anybody, including with the SF, and the Rangers usually had an ego problem that got them into trouble in combat. The Rangers actually have a lot in common with the US Marine Corps: they are brainwashed and do not conduct operations that are fully sane, their casulty rates are very high! Both Rangers and Special Forces take similar qualification training, such as being parachute qualified and the like. But their roles are much different. Actually, Special Forces are the combat trainers of other nations and groups. They TEACH the other nations' armies how to fight, how to interact with allies, and how to be a coordinated military system. It is not really the job of the Special Forces to engage in combat, but they will if the mission calls for it. The Special Forces in Afghanistan are NOT being used in the proper way, but we are short of combat personnel, so they are being used the same way as the Marines are used. Rangers are the "bad boys" of the US Army, they think they are better than they are and they go out and get in trouble often enough with very high casulty rates. Originally, the Rangers were made up of jailed civilian toughs that were selected, inducted, and trained for one last chance in their lives to become special soldiers during World War 2. The Rangers did not take just any jailed inmate, only the ones they thought were very tough but were also controllable. From that, Rangers turned totally to enlistees and draftees from outside the prison system, and as a result of egocentric training and leadership, they migrated into the realm of thinking they are better than they are. Special Forces is actually a higher level of qualification than Rangers, although both have a tough regimen. You cannot take BOTH. You either become Special Forces or you become Rangers. |
