| 30mm telescope or no telescope?
I am thinking of getting a simple 30mm telescope. Coz of some unimportant reasons , my situation is like either get this 30mm telescope or don't get a telescope (get something else like a pen drive) So shld I buy it? or wld it like real disappointing? I understand that a 30mm telescope is just a childs toy.. (according to this thread http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=An2wx6xKeFlyDaTjUMeKBMAHxgt.;_ylv=3?qid =20070627213327AA9NUM9) Its sort of annoying that I can't get a 50mm or 60mm , but that's the way it is... btw I have wanted a telescope like forever. IT claims a 30x magnification - http://shopping.sify.com/All_Categories/Original_Tasco_30_Power_Telescope_with_Table_Top_T ripod-_item_12101___14230718.html and I am in India $7 ain't that less an amount |

A 3cm scope, hmm, not worth it. I suggest going to a pawn shop and getting binoculars as they would be better and likely the same price as a 3 cm scope. I use an 80 mm and it works ok for a few things but my 200 mm is better. Getting a 400 mm soon, that will rock. |

Look, people will tell you that it's a child's toy, and in comparison to telescopes some of us have used or built, it is. But it is far better than the naked eye. I would say if you are thinking about a telescope that size, you might consider a pair of binoculars. I don't know what price range you are talking about, but you should be able to find some decent second-hand ones with at least 50 mm lenses for the same price. Check it out on e-bay some time. I have seen lots of them there.

A pair of binoculars will not offer as much magnification, as some people think. If this 30MM 30X telescope is of decent optical quality, go for it. A pair of binoculars that has that much magnification would be impossible to hand-hold, (you would need a tripod) and would be very expensive. The only drawback with a 30MM telescope, assuming its optics are decent, is its ability to gather light, so you won't be able to see deep-space objects, but certainly you should be able to make out the rings of Saturn, the great nebula in Orion, and lots of detail on the Moon. I say buy it, if nothing else just for the fun of it. That being said, if it has optics that suck, like plastic lenses, then avoid it.
