| Any one with a Bachelor's degree or higher in Biology, please help?
I am currently working on a BS in biology, with a concentration in ecology and evolution. I am thinking about minoring in education. But the problem is, my mother (who was also a bio major and graduated with a BA) doesn't seem to think the job market for education is very strong. I tried to do some research and couldn't really come to a conclusion as to what the job outlook is for biology teachers. I really, really love my major, and cannot see myself completing any other major in college. But I am very worried about employment after college. I will probably also go to grad school, but that is a few more years away. What other careers require the degree I am working on? Answers and advice would be greatly appreciated. |

I have a BA in molecular cell biology. Violet, that part where you said that a BA is useless in science is total BOLLOCKS. I went to UC Berkeley; because biology is in the College of Letters and Science, it is customary to award the BA and not the BS. There is actually a good market for science teachers if you are willing to work ANYWHERE. Demand is high in rural and poor regions. My best friend is completing her teaching credential and BA in education. She is aiming to teach biology or middle school life science. Because we are from a rural area, she's already got job offers lined up. There is also demand for biology instructors at the community college level, as long as you can complete a masters degree. One of my good friends is a biology instructor at a local CC. You don't have to teach. If you live in a region where there are some biotech or pharm firms, you can get a job as a lab scientist. If you like lab work, you can get state certification to work as a lab scientist in a microbiology lab. Or you could even pursue a job in environemntal health -- health inspectors are in great demand and the jobs only require a bachelors degree and certain science pre-requisites. I took my bio degree and got a masters of public health. I work as an infectious disease epidemiologist for my local health department. I investigate outbreaks of disease. It's a really cool job, and it makes good use of my science knowledge. Whatever the case, I think you need to open your mind to biology gigs outside the classroom. |
