Lakes gradually fill in with organic debris. Theoretically, at least, they become ponds, then wetlands. Which way they go to climax vegetation depends on the climax for that particular area.

If you want to have some fun, ask your teacher when Lake Baikal (in Siberia) is going to fill in. That's by far the deepest lake in the world. Light doesn't reach the bottom. You will then learn the term "subclimax".
