| Social Work Major with a Science Question.?
My name is Brian and I go to a community college in CT. I have one semester left(Fall) in order to graduate. I plan to continue my studies at Southern CT State Univ where I will enroll in the BSW program. However, I am very confused about what the Science requirements are for a Social Work Major. I took intro to Environmental Science and my last C.C requirement to graduate is to take a Science Lab. The choices are Intro to Biology or Human Biology. My goal is to get a BSW and then an MSW. Many MSW programs have the prerequisite of Human Biology. At my local C.C Human Bio is a one semester class. At SCSU it is Human Bio 1 and Human Bio 2. At my local cc it is just Human Biology(there is no part 1 and 2) I would assume that If I take Human Bio Lab at my local college it would be sufficient for both SCSU and a future MSW program. Would I be correct in this assumption? FOR ANYONE WHO HAS A BSW OR MSW WHAT ARE THE SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS. (Ive contacted SCSU + they were not helpful

| Social Work Major with a Science Question.?
As far as the MSW goes, I would assume that if you have a BSW you wouldn't have any further "general distribution" requirements in the MSW program.I looked at the requirements for the BSW degree at SCSU and it does mention biology as a freshman year requirement. Whether the bio you took would fulfill that requirement is something SCSU would determine, based on course description, etc. It looks like the sophomore year suggested program has a lot of pretty specific courses that I would wonder whether you have taken at CC. You may end up having to take more credits than you might have planned on, from the looks of their program description. Does your CC have an agreement with SCSU to accept their graduates into their four-year program? I'd think it would be worth it to see whether you can meet with a "transfer counselor" [that they mentioned on the website] to discuss which of your classes would transfer to their program. You'd want to take along a course catalog.Good luck to you!

| Social Work Major with a Science Question.?
Each school is going to have different requirements (both BSW and MSW (some schools require human bio, others just bio and still others just a liberal arts distribution which could be any science. If a school requires "human bio" a single semester is all that is required. It would be rare to take the lab without the course (which is what I think you have said). If I were you I would take the Human Bio course for two reasons.1) It may be required at the MSW program you are most interested in.2) It will really be helpful in understanding human behavior. So much of what we do has a biological component. Understanding this is really important.DA
